NW IA | The straw is small squared mainly for calf hut bedding. I did a few rounds to finish up last year because I had enough. If I had room to store them the smalls would sell well in the winter.
The clover is mostly for soil health, and I like having a place to haul manure in August. I have had a good cutting of red clover hay after the oats are off. One year I had spread bedded pack manure fairly heavily followed by some good rains and the clover and Nitrogen brand alfalfa came back thick right through it. I had to get a neighbor to cut it with a disc mower because of the chunks of manure. It was baled super dry and I told the buyers about the manure that was in the bales. Cattle ate it well and the buyers liked it. If there is a good stand this fall I will be leaving part of the field un-spread for hay and hope to terminate the regrowth. Leaving it over winter can go badly if trying to terminate in the spring. | |
