Subject: Dry Fertilizer Fiasco

Eastern Nebraska
We were planning on top dressing our corn with a mix of 170 lbs of Urea and 100 lbs of 21-0-0-24S for a total of 270 lbs per acre.

The fiasco: my brother had the coop help him set and double check the rate on the spreader. He went and started on a field and rather than it lasting 38 acres it was gone in 13. He took the cart back and the coop realized they had left it in the high range and was actually set closer to 800 lbs/acre. To muddy the waters further they also mixed up the amounts for the urea and AMS. Some quick napkin math say that about 230 lbs/acre of N and 115 lbs/acre of sulfur got put down for those 13 acres.

The coop already said they would foot the bill for the mistake. I want to know how those 13 acres are going to be affected. We’ve had very heavy rains since our first application of N so I think the extra N would be good but don’t know how much burning will occur or how the excessive sulfur will affect the plant. Any thoughts?
