nw NC | Years ago any corn planted here after mid June was certain to become infested with corn earworm when it grew to about 10 inches tall. At that time the first northerly flight of earworm moths arrived from points south. Corn had to be sprayed directly over the top of the plants in row using full cone nozzles spraying high volumes of insecticide solution. High volumes were needed to get the solution down into the whorl where the critters took up residence. It worked satisfactorily for the most part. Since advent of BT traited corn , no more need to spray should there be late plantings of corn. I planted some 115 day corn last year on first day or two of July and it made a high yield of silage with lots of grain in it. | |
