Subject: Paraquat and UAN

Mitchell, SD
We are planting sunflowers into pollinating rye recently sprayed with roundup. Had fertilized end of April to catch a rain to incorporate, unfortunately kept raining so rye has used up much of the N. Thinking about spraying 30-40# of N on with UAN on with the sulfentrazone. I know there will be small waterhemp and other weeds that won’t be killed with the roundup. Will be adding paraquat for extra assurance. Coverage will be at least 20 gpa. Haven’t done much uan spraying, will know it would put the hurt on many weeds by itself. Any advice on paraquat rates with the combo? Also considering roller packing the rye flatter but fearful of the shading effect it may have on weed control, or would it potentially help to shade/smother young smaller weeds? Spray with most of the rye standing for the most part very well, then roller pack or visa versa? I will be soil testing to make sure we are not short of N in the end. Thanks for input!
