Latimer, Iowa (north central)
I would do something to try and grow nitrogen and be deep rooted. The ideal scenario in our area would be to pattern tile the farm first. Then plant a crimson clover and just a couple lbs to purple top turnips and daikon radishes, possibly hairy vetch or forage peas. If there is a buckwheat market for you I would consider that. I would be leery of planting a small grain until August as it could go to seed if planted too soon.

Prevent plant in 2013 and seeing the benefits covers did really got us started doing them. We pattern tiled all of our prevent plant that summer too.

Definitely see what your FSA/BRCS has to offer for incentives. Practical farmers of Iowa may be able to pay you up to 15 an acre as well even though you are in MN.
