NW IA | 2 years ago my wife asked if I would find a place for a few pumpkins since they take up so much space in the garden.
I knew what the weed problem had looked like in the past.
It just happened that I was between groups in our calf huts. I took the 8-10 inch deep 4'X8' bedding "pad" from 4 huts and used my skidder manure fork to place them behind an old hog house site. I planted the pumpkin seeds where the four corners of the pads met. Literally no weeds ever emerged, and the pumpkins seemed to thrive; the manure and mulch "fed" the plants and kept the soil moist. The weeds did get going outside of the mulched area later on so I should have kept adding thick mulch to the perimeter.
Thick mulch may be an option for just a few plants. | |
