I'm skeptical of roots bringing fertilizer up, all a plant can do is absorb fertility and use it for its own growth.
Which is exactly what it is doing. Pulling the N out of ground (rye roots can reach 8-10ft in the right soils) and transferring it back to top growth. That growth is terminated the following spring when C:N ratio is low and returned to the new crop.
With all the wet weather, what has happened to the Nitrogen we applied!
