Subject: pH, Lime, and Alfalfa

Hello.

Just got soil tests back and pH is 5.9 and 6.0 on the 2 fields I tested. The 6.0 is planned to be alfalfa/grass hay this year. I understand alfalfa likes closer to 7. So just add lime, right? Thing is, I have NEVER seen lime being applied in this area, and there are no limestone quarries. Only glacial till gravel/sand. I grew up in Illinois, where limestone was plentiful and saw it being applied all the time. Not here in N Minn.

What are my options? Wood ashes from the OSB factory? I don't know how or if that works, yet.

What does it take to raise pH a whole point?

Thank you for your thoughts. Also posting this in Stock Talk.
