South Central MN | After reading that article I wonder if that purpling trait when it is cool out isn't a cope/survival mechanism and helps warm up the leaves quicker once the sun shines on them. Some other types of corn will express those pigments, as well as a lot of other plants.
Winter rye is also pretty dark colored when it first comes up and is very cold tolerant.
That said would be rather easy to confuse it for a nutrient deficiency if not used to it. | |
