This is a real problem with residue from 90-100+ bushel wheat along with a good crop of DC beans here in southern Il. We end up running a turbo-max across the ground at some point. It seems to help us a lot to have a pass ahead of the NH3, but then another pass ahead of the planter seems to bury a bunch of residue. Really prefer only one pass of some light tillage. Not much help though to anyone wanting to be 100% no-till
This is exactly right. A lot of people’s suggestions don’t include or take into account that we double crop beans into wheat. This makes all that residue into a matt. We have gotten to the point that we run a vertical till pass in the fall and in spring after ammonia. It is a great balance between keeping residue and getting a seedbed you need.
This is from some very good corn, wheat, dc bean rotation farms as we got very lucky the last few summers. |
