Subject: RE: Soybean maturity ratings?

Weiner, AR
It is actually the length of darkness that triggers the reproductive stage. Soybeans grown near a streetlamp that shines all night stay vegetative for the most part and continue putting on nodes. Pods will be distorted and not fully formed. Soybean maturity date is relative to the genetics, latitude at where it is planted and when it is planted as well as any stress. If someone is giving exact days to maturity no matter what, then I would be concerned. The actual maturity date is a moving number. Many seed companies can be off a few tenths for whatever reason including marketing. Most designations such as RM 2.5 or RM 4.1 are given by the breeder or selection team in side by side replicated plots comparing to some standard known varieties with a given maturity or so many days past a certain date to reach maturity. If you want to prove someone wrong on exact days, then plant that same variety 200 miles north or south of your farm and seed if it matures in the same amount of days. There are determinant, semi-determinant, and indeterminant plants. The separation has usually been defined as 4.9 or earlier are indeterminant and later than are determinant. There are some outliers on later maturing soybeans indeterminant group 5, 6, and 7.
