Cover crops behind the combine, and related vertical tillage......I have never been around vertical till disk............but have planted cereal rye for cover crops for eons.If we had (or did not have) a chopping head.................could we broadcast cereal rye immediately behind the combine...........and then run the VT in the growing rye, later, WITHOUT killing the bulk of the rye?We have always finished combining about Thanksgiving, apply slurry, rip/field cultivate/disk most of the acres, and THEN sow the rye with drill (or broadcast, but usually with drill). Typically get done by 12/10......or when the snow is hitting the windshield.I guess the bottom line is ...........how much rye would the VT kill? (assume a 5degree blade set)Thanks.
