Subject: RE: Alfalfa

North Dakota
I am aware of Autotoxity. Hoping over time I can keep my alfalfa fields productive by spiking/rolling every other year. Been seeding oats a couple of years before planting alfalfa.
So seeding alfalfa just once to establish the initial stand.
I won't be able to claim victory over this process until it is still producing after 10 years what it produced the 2nd or 3rd year after planting. I will continue following the established pattern on the 1st 40 acres for another 5 years. That will make it a 10 year field. I am keeping track of the number of bales, amount of rainfall, and exactly when it is cut, spiked, or rotary mowed.
If it works for 10 years I will start bragging to immediate family, at 15 years I will brag to friends also, and at 20 years if still maintaining the early rate of prod absolutely everyone will hear me. After that I will be too old to care anymore. I am 67 yrs old now.......don't know if I'll make it another 15 and still care.
