ontario
We grow mainly hay, with a side of corn and beans. In our area there's lots of very old hay fields, some probably 20 yrs, mostly grassy. Horse barns her like mainly grass hay. or a grass and alfalfa mix.
We run on heavy clay soil, and its tough sometimes getting a stand established, so not something you want to do every 3-4 yrs. Timothy grows quite well on it and sells good. Only 1 cut though.

I'd think you'd want to go about 4-5 yrs to make it worthwhile losing the 1st year as you dont get much crop the first yr of seeding down.
