Eastern Shore of MD | We really like growing barley here. Locally there is a malt market, a dog food market and we also grow 6 row barley
for seed that I believe goes into the PA dairy market. Barley does well on our sandy loam soils so hope to see continued markets.
A barley ethanol plant was built in Hopewell, VA which would have increased acres locally but it never really got operational before it was sold and dismantled. It was claimed barley was a less efficient feed stock than corn but I am really not sure why the plant failed.
