It started with Teosinte,
Maybe there are other variants?
One day God moved the ear from the tassel to the side, about 1/2 way up on the stalk.
Maybe this was noted in some of the Mayan Codices? 
These were transported to Spain and promptly burned by the Spanish authorities. 
Sometime in the 1500’s
