| I don’t grow barley but always find a few plants growing in one variety of winter oats. From observation, I’d say it’s just like wheat but maybe a week or 10 days earlier. So all spring applications would be moved 10 days earlier. Treat it like you would treat wheat to make good and it’ll make good I bet.
There’s probably as much variation in yields due to variety as there is due to species. I guess what I’m saying is if your wheat yields between 2500-3000# (42-50 bushel) the barley will yield between 2500-3000# (52-62 bushel), barley is 48#/bushel. So if the feedlot said it yields 1.5x wheat, on a bushel basis, I can see that being very likely. By weight quite a bit harder, still possible. I’ve had oats several times yield in the 4800# area while the wheat adjacent only made 3300#. | |
