NW IL | Can't speak to the profit part, but it seems like a lot of our hay customers come to us word of mouth.
Small square, big sq, or round? Different type attract different customers. In the sm sq side we have many folks that take 80-100 a year. Come with their rack or trailer, load with the accumulator forks in the field and don't have to mess with handling multiple times.
Dad's been in the business for over 20 years, so his name is out there. Today you might need to do some FB or newspaper adds to become known.
It's also handy to have a couple feed lot friends who will buy rained on or old hay.
And, last tip. If anyone complains about bad or moldy hay offer to exchange it free of charge, but they need to bring the bad bales back. If the animals already ate it then it must not have been too bad. Otherwise you'll have folks demanding refunds or additional hay with no way to prove they aren't lying to get free hay. Amazing how many people don't think it's worth it to bring back "bad bales." | |
