Sprayed out knee high rye just starting to head out is going to be difficult for a crimper to lay down unless it's a thick stand. Here's a link to a thread a few years ago where I did what you're talking about doing but rye was 4ft tall and had some decent size heads out. Only thing I would of done differently would of been to get right back on it with the crimper after it was sprayed instead of waiting a few days. I'm a big proponent of crimpers but your situation isn't where they shine the best. Like I said above if it's a thick stand I would probably try it but if not then probably not worth the effort.
