The way that farming is sustainable or made more productive is the use of commercial fertilizer because if crops are removed they take away nutrients that need to be replaced or increased. A lot of soils do not contain the levels of fertility to raise levels of production and are left is a fixed state of productive with out added fertilizer or other elements not found in the soil there.
