I agree that weather/mother nature has way more influence on yields than anything we can control.
I do not agree with the idea that mother nature cancels out all our decisions that are based (partially) on yield maps.
Decisions based on yield maps are in no way "foregone conclusions", and not automatically wrong because of weather.
I also disagree with the idea that yield maps have no value because of using all manure for fertilizer. When you have variable spots across the field, (and we all do), the higher yielding spots are going to remove more nutrients. Eventually those higher yielding spots will become yield limited because of using more nutrients every year.
Or, if you are over-applying to cover all needs on the best-yielding spots, the lower-yielding spots will become too high and un-balanced in nutrients, and more prone to leaching, etc. So I think there is still value in yield maps there.
But it may not be a fit for everyone...
