Subject: RE: Reliable means to decrease slug populations

Elkmont, AL
Definitely needs to be more work and research on slug problems. Only time I have trouble is planting cotton behind corn. Easily lost 25% more of several stands. Have very little issues behind dc/wheat beans, not sure why it is so bad behind corn. I like cover crops and use them behind cotton not going to wheat, but due to slug pressure I don’t behind corn. I’m 100% no till and not really set up for full scale tillage. A few trends I’ve discovered is they hate hot and dry. I’ve started delaying my cotton behind corn so hopefully I’m closer to a warmer pattern. I’ve also started running a Phillips harrow on corn stalks directly in front of the planter and it disturbs enough dirt that maybe I dry some of them out?, regardless of why it seems to help. Also set my row cleaners really aggressive so I have a wide clear strip. I try to also make sure I’m completely closing the slot, when I don’t they seem to get in the slot and just go down the row clipping plants. I would love to find more solutions that don’t involve more tillage.
