Kettle Moraine, WI | +1 on it can be a harvest challenge especially in a wet year and the red clover can be at the same height as the oats and lots of green material that needs to run through the combine. Having the option to swath and pickup head in combine is big advantage.
I have best luck combining clipping the tips and then mowing to the ground for straw/clover baleage. Makes bulky feed for heifers that can be quite palatable put of wet to soften the stems. The real reason is all the sunlight then gets down to the clover and have a real nice clover growth before winter.
I have used a mix of red and white clover for under seeding. White clover is lower growing and less harvest aggravation. Could have been year circumstantial but I heard one farmer say mammoth red clover under seeded was a disaster for him.
