We used to do them your way.Now we run them all thru black poly.I think 6 rows wide on the bed.They seem to do well here that way.I do know if you use a square dibbler in heavy soil and insert the onion plant,,it will grow with a square shape..use a round dibbler and only go sub 2 inch,set it in there,,we dribble water on the beds as its planted.to close the roots in better.Had to thaw out the water wheel this morning to be able to plant onions,,was 18 degrees.Its lacking in growing degree days here so poly is the gain for us.
