Ontario | How heavy is the current alfalfa stand? If it's getting thin you will probably be fine before 2 years. But that being said with the price of the seed if you can get away using alternative forage options like hay barley like you mentioned, oats and peas, triticale etc for a couple years then it will just increase your odds of getting a good stand. Depending on your climate and what you're using it for you could do a red clover hay mix as well for a few years then when that gets played out spray it off and drill your alfalfa again. Red clover makes a real nice balage/silage but doesn't make as good of dry hay IMO. | |
