West Texas | Those are cotton stalks left from the year before. They help block the wind and give the young vines something to anchor to. We have subsurface drip tape between the two rows of stalks so we plant the single row of melons right above the drip tape. We have been experimenting with planting wheat or rye outside of those rows of stalks to help keep dust down too.
