Do not mess with the roots on any cucurbit.It s not like say a cole crop where beating them helps.Do not overly plant deep either.Do not touch the stem as you are close to doing.Note the small hairs on the stem.These keep fungi/bacti from entering the vascular tissues.Squeezing the stem will get you dead plants in many cases as lots of bacti on your hands /soil etc.Just grab the top gently and press only on the root ball when planting.I would use them.here its going to be in the low 20's Thursday,,we have not even seeded melons in the greenhouse yet as memorial day is our start to transplant.We figure 30 days seeded in greenhouse to a small melon plant to transplant.
