Subject: RE: Anyone using nematodes for rootworm control

Hi all,
Elson Shields here and somebody directed me to this thread, thinking I could shed light on the topic

BillNNY and ClusterFarm did a good job describing how the research came about against alfalfa snout beetle, who's entire North America infestation is 9 counties in NNY where it kills out alfalfa in a single year. They listened to me for 36 years while at Cornell. BTW Bill, I got old and retired in Sept 2022, age 71.

Two different multiyear studies showed activity on Corn rootworm in NY and then multiple studies across the US Corn Belt. Single application => multiyear rootworm control. 5 growing seasons documented in Roswell, NM from a single application

The company "Persistent Biocontrol" was started by my son Keegan and 30+ year Research Support Specialist, Tony, so the technology was not lost and made available to farmers outside of NY. I offered to help for 5 years as old age permits.

Bullet points of interest:

More than 75,000 acres inoculated in NY against alfalfa snout beetle and corn rootworm. This number grows by ~2500 acres per year.

10,000 acres will be applied in Iowa in May 2024 against corn rootworm in continuous corn fields where traited corn is failing.

2023: Under Iowa drought, failing traited corn + biocontrol nematodes applied in 2022 demonstrated a 30 bu/ac yield recovery against failing traited corn alone (3rd party trial)

Typical yield recovery in failing traited fields when biocontrol nematodes are added with sufficient rainfall is 6-15 bu/ac

Typical yield recovery under center pivot irrigation with failing traits in 12-15 bu/ac.

As previously stated by farmers on the thread, farmers sell this technology to other farmers. Wheat1 has treated all of his continuous corn acreage, I believe.

If I can answer any questions privately, my email is [email protected]

Or, I would be happy to answer questions on the forum

Elson
