I'm not aware of an actual study that answers your perfectly reasonable dollars and cents question.
That said, my own no-till experience has been that sometimes I need them to avoid hair-pinning in heavy residue as a result of windrowing of "trash" due to wind etc. We also have bedded pack manure chunks to move away from openers.
I would not be comfortable without them in my circumstances.
