Subject: RE: Question for those that graze winter wheat

Okanogan Wa.
This may or may not be relevant but it’s closer to home. We used to turn weaned calves out on conventional tilled wheat in the fall. First few times we were careful not to take too much off for fear of hurting yields. As we got more confidence we left them longer to the point we let them take it from 8” tall to about 1”+ and didn’t see adverse affects.
We took them off when winter weather set in. We didn’t put back on in the spring so your situation is a bit different but the amount grazed in your picture is not alarming to me. I wouldn’t like it any better than you do but hopefully as things green up they will move on to something more palatable when it comes available.
On that note we have had cattle get into wheat this time of year and they mostly walk through the wheat to get to something smaller and more tasty.
