Subject: Question for those that graze winter wheat

Cloverland, Wa
Hi all. I know that in some areas winter wheat is grazed. That isn’t a common practice around here (SE Washington). At what point do you remove the cows in the spring?

The reason I ask is that our resident elk herd of 300 head have decided to camp out in our winter wheat. We normally have elk in the fall and winter, but never this many this late. As you might imagine they are really going to town on the wheat. You can go run them off, they bugger off down into the canyons, then come back. They may not be doing any damage other than cosmetic, but the areas where they haven’t been sure look better than where they have.

As soon as I get my spring herbicide done, which will be soon, I plan to set up fence panels in a triangle both where they’ve been and where they haven’t to see what sort of damage has been done if any.

Thanks,

Bruce.
