Not necessarily a hilltop just areas where the soil is less compacted or dry. Obviously that can be hilltops but It happens in the low fields if they are planted a few days later with warm windy days in between. We have some very silty soil that will turn into a deep dry powder like flour when dry and it will bury that seed an extra inch at times. Repeated rains this spring have allowed us to avoid that problem this year but normally we have to go fast in the spring to stay ahead of it. We have seen when we plant the hilltops first in good moisture and can't get to the heavier low spots until 5 days later when things are a bit too dry the earlier planted hilltops can actually end up tillering and yielding as good or better than the low fields that were planted a little deeper to get to the moisture. I very much prefer to just irrigate and delay planting by a week or two than to plant where it is too dry and will put the seed too deep.
