Subject: RE: Pell Lime

NW Ohio
I know I'm in the minority here. But I do put my money where my mouth is, I spread about 100 ton of high cal pelleted lime a year. My program is start by correcting pH with quarry lime. I use soil types as my zones and variable rate according to the each zone. Then every other year or each time I plant soybeans I apply 150-200 lbs. per acre. This keeps your soil pH and Buffer pH at acceptable levels. The reason I always have pell lime ahead of soybeans is it increases pH which also make Molybdenum more available which will help the soybeans/rihzobia in nitrogen fixation. I have been on this program for 15 years now and have only spread maybe 200 acres with quarry lime in the last 15 years. In fact this spring some of my fields I'm backing the pell lime down to 100 lbs/acre do to pH getting in the low 7s.

Something for all you Na-sayers next time you spread quarry lime watch how far the lime cloud moves. This is your finest most reactive lime that you are giving your neighbors.
