Subject: RE: 2024 SRWW progression in Growth Stages?

We try to select short varieties for clients, ideally those which have an average plant height of around 32-34", and those which have stiff stems and very good standability ratings. These are all required with the high N rates essential for high yields. Growers in this category rarely need a growth regulator.

If anyone plants tall varieties (say 40" or 42" tall ones), then they likely need a growth regulator, especially in a high lodging pressure environment. These will likely reduce the plant height to around 36-38" (within the same 40-42" varieties).

Most wheat growers would be better served planting shorter varieties instead of tall ones, then spending the $12-15 per acre Palisade expense (plus application?) towards something that makes them money, like a better scab fungicide, or an insecticide, or a good flag leaf fungicide.

Lastly you asked about growth regulators and the short plant height we are seeing. If anyone needed a growth regulator, it would have likely been applied 3-4 weeks ago, ahead of any recognition of the canopy being shorter than average (for this growth stage).
