I think proper planting depth is a little more important for winter wheat, compared to spring wheat.  So I would say it depends on which type of wheat you are talking about. 

Peter Johnson and Phil Needham are who I think of has being "Wheat Guru's".... or "Wheat Whisperers".  Below is a discussion from Peter Johnson on proper planting depth for wheat.  Some good stuff, I think.
