I don’t see how the 1/4” difference could make any difference at all, both 1/2” and 3/4” seem awfully shallow. Your observations about poor tillering and lack of vigor on dry hilltops seems much more likely to be a result of it being a dry hilltop than the drill going a little deeper there.
