Subject: RE: 30" or 38" Cotton ?

Elkmont, AL
I’m on 40”s and I really like them. In my area there is 30”, 30” skip, 30” modified skip, 38”, and 40”. Honestly if they are all managed correctly yield is comparable and none to very little difference between all spacings in our area. Biggest drawback to 30” rows is picker efficiency. 30” row pickers stink to work on and covering 15ft Vs 20ft at a roller pickers fuel burn rate is significant, which is why there is modified 30” skip in our area, so they can still cover 20’ on 30”s. Agronomically an advantage to 30”s is quick canopy closure, which is important if you have resistant weeds. Disadvantages can be reduced airflow between rows and pix management is more crucial to prevent issues with boll rot and rank cotton. I plan to stay on 40”s and plan to move to 20” corn and beans at some point in the future so everything I have is on the same basic spacing, and no more narrowed in tractors.
