Subject: RE: What depth should dry fertilizer be on John Deere Corn Planter?

West of Mpls MN about 50 miles on Hwy 12
The Deere opener should be running at a slight angle to the direction of travel, the coulter will open up a trench and the fertilizer will fall into the bottom of the coulter trench. Measuring from the bottom of the coulter to the bottom of the depth wheel is about the depth your fertilizer will be placed. The depth of the gauge wheel is set by moving a bolt that is located on the cast piece at the left side of your picture. There are three depth settings, I have always had mine set on the deepest setting. The bolt and nut facing forward in the picture is the shear bolt in case the coulter cannot ride up and over a terrorist rock or some other obstruction. When that bolt breaks your fertilizer will be placed at least six inches deep.

edit to add...After reading other replies, I'm not sure how, but we have managed to grow 200+ bushel corn putting all of our fertilizer down with the planter using Deere single disk openers since Deere started making single disk openers. I even run them on my dry pneumatic side dress cart and the Deere coulters are waaaay more trouble free and require less "regular" maintenance than the Ausherman coulters they replaced. And the Deere coulters go in the ground waaaay better then the Ausherman coulters when side dressing Urea as well.
