I’m going to bet the majority of seed that has Monsanto traits (such as VT2 or SmartStack) comes from parent seed that could be or is related to Dekalb (or any of the other Bayer brands). But to say it is Dekalb in a different bag is grossly misrepresenting it. I was told at one time the breeding division of bayer has tiers of companies they sell genetics and parent material to and depending on their relationship or contract with bayer they depends on the tier or quality of genetics they get. Also the regional/local vs national footprint conversation comes into play. I’ve grown and sold seed in my backyard that was great for us but would have been a flop for someone in Nebraska or Kansas most likely. There are some hidden gems locally that National brands can’t touch because it doesn’t have a big enough footprint to serve them on the national level. That’s where a smaller/regional brand CAN have an advantage, it doesn’t always mean they will.
