east central ND | On the green older tractors, if you have a decent amount of snow, reverse low gear is way too fast. I don’t know about red tractors. In newer tractors I hear an IVT type transmission is wonderful for blowing snow.
An 8’ blower is the normal around here to get past the tires on 30” without duals. Guys with 22” rows like a blower a bit wider. The older blowers tend to have smaller 3 blade fans and newer ones bigger fans with more blades to blow more snow further. Most older blowers are probably rated for 100 to 125 hp. A handful of Extra shear bolts is a must, one chunk of ice, or loading it too full can pop a shear bolt quick.
I had been getting by fairly well for the last 10 years with a used 8’ blower that I was pleased with, as long as I didn’t use it much. After the continuous snow blowing ALL last winter, I sold the 40 or 50 year old blower I had and got a new MK Martin “Meteor” 8 footer. Supposed to be rated for 200 hp. Twice as heavy as the old blower I had, but not as heavy as the top end units that were 1/3 higher price. Had it on the tractor to make sure it worked a while back, but haven’t used it yet. I might have to hook it up this weekend.
