Sac & Story county IA | Gear train was bad. The axles were 1066. (I think)
My neighbor had one. Broke down most of the time. When he traded it off, he was looking to borrow hose to pump fuel out. Back in his bulk tank. He needed about 200 feet of hose. He didn't want to drive it closer to the fuel tank in case it would break moving it a couple hundred feet.

Crawfordsville, Arkansas | My only experience is with a 4386 but yeah, not much good about them. I did like the 3 point downpressure though. Would have made a great levee splitting tractor except for that whole lack of power thing..
I bought mine with a full tank of fuel and gave $1,500 for it. I figure I had a few hundred $$$ of fuel alone in it when I bought it. Used it sparingly for a few years then unloaded it on Craigslist. Traded even for a FL70 Freightliner 5.9 Cummins with a service bed on it. I am pretty sure I got the better end of the deal! |

| Well, I am going to be the odd man out when I say that it can be a pretty reliable tractor if used in the proper setting. Our old 4366 is one of our primary tillage tractors and it sees about 200 working hours per year pulling a disk. In fact, it has been pretty much trouble free over the last 5 years. In the past, any troubles that we have had with it have usually been motor related. The transmission, power divider, and drive train have held up very well over the years.
The good: 1) cheap draft horsepower, 2) easy to work on, and 3) should be reliable.
The bad: 1) it is not very luxurious to operate, 2) it is only a 225 motor hp tractor, and 3) it has limited hydraulic capability.
Again, it is not a very big tractor in today’s standards, but it should give many years of dependable service if it is properly maintained. It can drag an implement through the field just as good as new tractor all day long, but the operator will be fatigued at the end of the day.
Just out of curiosity, what are you wanting to use it for?

Sunburst Montana | I'm kinda surprised at the bad reviews of the 4366. Aren't they just a Steiger with the IH 466 engines and IH axles? The 466 I thought was a good engine. Never hear anything good about the bigger ones with the V8. |

s nd | Think I put an awful lot of u-joints in mine. I think they were timed right. First four wheel drive. |

| Not sure what these guys are talking about, ran a 4366 for many years with very few problems, had over 9,000 hrs when we traded it. Use them as the 180 hp tractor they are and they are fine, use them as a 300 hp tractor and you will have problems. Not as comfortable as todays tractors, kind of loud, noisy and hot but for their day they were ok. DT466 motors, Fuller roadranger transmission, 1066 axles. Simple and easy to work on. If taken care of would not be scared at all.

NC Indiana | I'm told a 318 and an Allison made a tractor out of the V8's. |

Boone, Iowa | We ran a 4366 as our "big" tractor for years. It was noisy, no frills tractor. We installed an intercooler, soon after we brought it home. Over the years, we had to put an update kit in the transfer box, install a couple of engine clutches and rebuild the engine. We pulled a 42 ft Wil-Rich field cultivator, 27 ft IH 490 disk and a Glenco soil saver chisel plow. For a while we also had a 4386, which was night and day difference in the cabs. The best thing I did was to add a Bosch P pump set at 230 hp and 3LM466 turbo to the 4386. All of the years we had these two tractors around, did not have any axle problems. |

Mississippi Delta | My family still has a 4366, and used to have a 4386. They are decent tractors if used for the right thing, ie basic tillage with a 24-27' disc, up to a 40' field cultivator, etc. It is rough as heck, though.
One limited purpose the 4366 is GREAT for because of the 3 point hitch down pressure: putting in metal rice gates with a gate machine. |
