You are working in feet. The sooner you quit working in inches the easier it will get. It took me quite a while to get over the inches thing but no reason to really think about it. You could carry a tape measure that works in feet and use it to look at to help visualize it.
Had one of those tape measures with inches on one side tenths on the other --finally threw it away
It's measure once cut two boards right???
