It is to give alittle more torque to the feeder, but mainly it is to prolong chain life.

In the original iteration the chain has a couple small idlers that cause some backspin in the chain rollers, causing accelerated chain wear.

It also allows you to remove the reverser chain when doing corn to cut down on wear even more.
