Subject: RE: Cow records

Central, IA
We just use an Excel spreadsheet right now for a herd of 40 cows. No extra cost involved in that. Record birth date, color, sex, and any important notes. I have 1 tab set up for each year, and then a master page with history on each cow in the herd. I also keep AI sire records and bulls used in this as well.

Cows are tagged, Calves get tagged to match cows as soon as possible. (Easiest to catch them before they have even gotten up to suck the 1st time!!). I use my own little system of tagging heifer calves in the left ear and bull calves in the right ear when they are born, We then put in 1 fly tag before they go to pasture. I do it this way so during the course of the year it is easier to look through the herd and pay attention to the heifer calves that might make possible replacements.
