Subject: Re: JD 544H starter

Our 544H did the same thing at 6000 hrs, but I took a close look at the ring gear when I changed the starter. The ring gear teeth were ground back where they normally engage. Engines tend to stop in the same few places a lot. It seemed to me if I weighed 50 pounds I might be able to get in to change the ring rear without pulling the remote located trans forward, so it went to the J-D dealer. They pulled the engine. About $1300 later (we had some other minor things done at the same time), it starts fine. Sorry, but it sounds like this might be your problem also. I kept the old starter as a spare, they would only give me $50 for it, and all it needed was a new drive gear.
