Helped Dad build sheds in late 60s and 70s, put 2x4 on top. From 79 on we hired sheds built. In 79 had contractor talk me into putting 2x6 purlins between rafters, said it would help keep birds out. Have built 4 more sheds/barns sense, all with 2x6 purlins embedded in the rafters. IMO building is lot more solid with purlins embedded in rafters.
