Central ND | My best advice. Grab an atlas and pull up google maps/google Earth. Look at photos on there and places of interest. Get off the main roads, ones not on a map. I'm talking paved 2 lane county roads. Curvy back country mountain roads, if you really like to drive. Never drive the same road twice. One way there and another way back.
That's how I did a road trip from central ND down to Phoenix, AZ. Then over to Los Angeles, CA. Back to Phoenix and home. Best 5200 miles I'll never forget.
Not sure how much detour you want to do but I've always wanted to drive what's called the Deals Gap if I remember right.
