Can't answer your question about driving. Wife and I and our 5 year old took the train from someplace in Illinois to down town and stayed the weekend this summer. Taxied it around. But the shedd aquarium is a great place. My kid still is talking about it and Chicago. Next to the aquarium is the museum and a planetarium. Didnt make it to those. Safety. My thought is probably most of the down town area like shedd to Michigan ave to navy pier is safe. And no your not nuts. I hate big citys but I did have fun. Maybe because I didnt have to drive at all. My 2cents.

Grant park is awsome in the summer. Wife and kid were in bed by 8. I went to the park and drank beer cause they had a stage with random music and random beer vendors. GREAT. And it was packed full of people.
