Subject: Washing machine agitators

Madison Co. Virginia
For folks buying top-load washing machines, pay attention to the design of the agitator. Some machines have a ratcheting screw on the top that pushes clothes down to the bottom. Others don't have this ratcheting piece, and clothes on top tend to stay on top.

As an example, I had a GE machine in the milking parlor that abruptly quit(possibly transmission problems). This one had the screw-top agitator. I pulled a spare machine out of storage, which happened to also be a GE. This one had a one-piece agitator. I watched the cow towels wash on that first load, and it was obvious that the ones floating on top were not getting washed. I swapped the agitator with the old machine(they just popped right out in this case), and the towels started circulating normally.

Any body else notice the difference in performance in these two types?
