Windrows don't necessarily shrink much (volume), but the weight of the material sure does. Stink, yes. Really bad about 2 weeks after piling. Has a different odor when spreading in the fall, but you know it's crap. All composting (turning the windrow) does is reduce moisture and ammonia N levels. I attached some samples from previous years piles. Need to get this years pile tested yet.
